A 5 letter word is one of the most common lengths of words in the English language. There are so many five letter words out there for us to choose from and we couldn’t possibly cover them all here today, but we’ll try our best to see what we can get through.
5 Letter Words
What Are 5 Letter Words?
5 letter words can come in all kinds of different forms, no two words would ever end up meaning the same thing. Whether it’s a noun you’re looking for, or maybe a verb, there will always be a 5 letter word available to you!
Do you need some help to overcome the hurdles of Wordle? Are you keen to learn something new about word game strategies? Relax, you’re in the right place for some tactical gems!
Five Letter Words and Wordle
We’re going to take it as read that you’re familiar with Wordle and jump straight into giving you useful information so you can play as well as possible and enjoy bragging rights over your friends! To do that we’re going to give you the most common letters for each position in Wordle words, from the first through to the fifth.
- First letter
The letter S has the plurality here, appearing as the first letter in more than 15% of Wordle words. It is followed, in descending order, by C, B, T, P, A, and F.
- Second letter
It should come as no surprise to those with knowledge of English that vowels are prominent in the second and third spots. The most frequent second letters are A, O, R, E, I, L, U, and H; each of which features over 5% of the time.
- Third letter
Once again using a 5% appearance rate as our lower threshold, the letters A, I, O, E, U, R, and N each appear as the third letter in more than 5% of Wordle words.
- Fourth letter
E is by far the most common letter in this position, appearing in fourth around 14% of the time. The next most frequent letters are E, N, S, A, L, I, R, C, T, and O.
- Fifth letter
Although dominated by a smaller margin, E is once again the most common letter. Hot on its heels come Y, T, R, L, H, N, and D.
- Bonus tip
We always give you more when we can, so here goes: in what is perhaps a surprising turnaround after it being the most frequent first letter in a Wordle word, S is one of the least common for the fifth-place slot. Appearing less than 2% of the time it ranks in a lowly 15th place.
5 Letter Words and Other Word Games
Wordle is the latest in a long line of word games to delight and confound many thousands of head-scratching players. Scrabble, invented by architect Alfred Butts in 1938, is one of the most well-known and possibly the most ubiquitous. It spawned the very similar Words With Friends, which for all its success as an online phenomenon is regarded by many word-game aficionados as being more open to chance and rewarding conservative gameplay than Butts’ creation.

Some digraphs are more useful than others for the word gamer. Here we’re going to focus on the pairing -er. It may not have escaped your attention that the first sentence of this section contains two such words, other and gamer, but here are some helpful extras for if you find yourself with other collections of tiles.
- 5 letter words starting with Er: erase, erect, erode, error, and erupt,
- 5 letter words ending with -er: asker, biker, cuter, drier, ether, fever, goner, hover, infer, and joker.
These are just a few suggestions to get you started and there are more in each category, with the latter by far outweighing the former.
