The Letter “Q”
In the English alphabet, some letters are used more than others. Not surprisingly, the letter E is most commonly used. When Samuel Morse was developing Morse Code, he counted the letters in sets of printer’s type. He found that J, X, and Z were the most infrequently used letters. If you check modern dictionaries, you will find that J, Q, and Z are the rarest. If you start looking into cryptology (which is the study or practice of using letters and words to hide information), you can add X to the list.
What makes the letter Q more difficult to use is that it is almost always followed by the letter U. QU is what is known as a digraph: two letters that represent a single sound. In this case, the “kuh” or “kwh” sound you make when you speak most words that start with Q.
The letter Q comes from the Latin and Greek languages. As they evolved, the letter C was used for most of the words having a “cuh” sound. That left Q dependent on the U in most cases.
As with the evolution of the rest of our alphabet, the French, the Etruscans, and the Phoenicians also played a role in the path to what we currently know as the letter Q. In general, it is considered the second least common letter. As a result, you are not going to find that many adjectives that start with the letter Q. In fact, there are only about 1,352 English words that start with Q in total. We say “about” because language is fluid and there are constant subtle changes (as well as new words being created).
