What Is A Rhyme?

Rhymes are repeated, similar sounds that are used as literary tools. They can be used as mnemonic devices to help memorize or learn facts, as well as to entertain and engage young readers like in nursery rhymes. While often associated with poetry, rhymes have been used in literature for centuries in ballads, songs, and even the Bible.

Types of Rhymes

There are several types of rhymes, which can be used for different reasons depending on the medium and desired effect.

  • The first is the perfect rhyme, in which two words have the same sounds in every syllable. This is most common in words with fewer syllables, as it is easier to achieve. Examples include “happy” and “sappy,” “host” and “most,” “fleece” and “geese.”
  • The next type is the syllabic rhyme, in which the last syllables have similar sounds, but not necessarily the same stressed vowel, like in “bitter” and “batter.”
  • Similarly, assonance or slant rhyme are words with the same vowel sounds like “tall” and “mall,” care” and “bare.” Consonance rhymes are words in which the consonants are similarly sounding, like in “shin” and “sheen,” “stop” and “stoop.”
  • Head rhymes or alliteration are similar to consonance in that they rely on similarly sounding first letters. Examples include “slippery” and “slope,” “crown” and “crow.”
  • Another common type of rhyme is the imperfect rhyme, in which an unstressed syllable in one word rhymes with a stressed syllable in another, as in “sing” and “hoping,” “tan” and “curtain.”

How you use rhymes and what type of rhyme is completely up to you. Moreover, many words can be made into rhymes by adding suffixed like -ly, -ed, and -ing. Finding words that rhyme can be a fun tool to learn to write and test out your creativity.

Rhyming Words

Rhyming words are words that have similar sounds at the end of each word or syllable, such as “cat” and “hat” or “cake” and “bake”. They are often used in poetry, song lyrics, and children’s literature to create a rhythmic and memorable effect.
