The 7ESL Cloze Test Generator turns any passage into a gap-fill exercise in seconds, and it runs entirely in your browser — free, no account, and your text never leaves your device. It supports the two kinds of gap-fill teachers actually use: the classic cloze, which deletes every Nth word to test overall reading and grammar sense, and the targeted cloze, which deletes exactly the vocabulary you are teaching. Each version comes with numbered gaps, an optional shuffled word bank, an answer key, and a printable worksheet with a name line.

How to use the Cloze Test Generator

Paste a passage of at least 20 words. For a classic cloze, choose the gap frequency — every 5th word is hard, every 7th is the standard, every 9th is gentle. For a vocabulary cloze, switch the method to "specific words" and list the words to remove; every occurrence of each word is gapped. Tick the word bank to give learners the removed words in shuffled order, which turns a hard recall task into a more supportive recognition task.

Why cloze works

Cloze passages force learners to use context: to fill a gap they must read around it, decide the part of speech, and choose a word that fits both grammar and meaning. That is why cloze appears in Cambridge, IELTS and TOEFL exam families in one form or another. A practical routine: run the same passage twice — first with a word bank as guided practice, then without it as a test. Short words of one or two letters are never gapped, so exercises stay fair.

Frequently asked questions

What is a cloze test?

A passage with words removed at intervals (or by choice), where learners fill each gap using context, grammar and vocabulary knowledge. It is a classic exercise format used in Cambridge, IELTS and TOEFL exam families.

What is the difference between the two gap methods?

The classic cloze deletes every Nth word automatically (5th = hard, 7th = standard, 9th = easy) to test general reading. The targeted mode deletes only the words you list — ideal for testing this week's vocabulary.

Can I give students a word bank?

Yes. Tick "Include shuffled word bank" and the removed words appear in random order under the passage — on screen and on the printout.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. The generator runs entirely in your browser; the passage never leaves your device, and the tool is free with no sign-up.

Can I print it as a worksheet?

Yes. Print produces a student page with a name line and the word bank, plus the answer key on a separate page for the teacher.
