Which test do universities, employers, schools and immigration offices accept? Our country guides explain it and link to the right practice tests.
Start with the reason you need a test, then check what the organisation you are applying to accepts. Universities most often ask for IELTS Academic, TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic or the Duolingo English Test, and many also accept Cambridge C1 Advanced. Immigration rules depend on the country: Canada, for example, accepts CELPIP-General, IELTS General Training and PTE Core, while Australia, the UK and New Zealand publish their own lists — see the country guides above. Employers in Japan, Korea and much of Asia often ask for TOEIC, and healthcare professionals usually need OET or, for nurses in Canada, CELBAN. For children and school students, the Cambridge Young Learners tests, TOEFL Primary and TOEFL Junior and EIKEN give a gentle, level-by-level path, and students learning English in US schools take WIDA ACCESS, or ELPAC in California and TELPAS in Texas.
Requirements change, and each university, employer, school or government office sets its own minimum score, so always confirm the exact test and version with them before you book.
