ACCUPLACER ESL has five separate tests, and your college chooses which ones you take. Each 7ESL practice test includes all five, and you can practice one at a time:
How ACCUPLACER ESL is scored
On ACCUPLACER ESL, Reading Skills, Sentence Meaning, Language Use and Listening are each scored from 20 to 120, and the WritePlacer ESL essay from 1 to 6. On 7ESL, the four multiple-choice parts are marked instantly and your number of correct answers (out of 20) is converted to an unofficial 20-120 estimate. WritePlacer ESL comes with Score 6, 4 and 2 sample essays, and Pro members can have an essay scored by the AI examiner.
What is ACCUPLACER ESL?
ACCUPLACER ESL is the English as a Second Language part of ACCUPLACER, the placement test that College Board provides to community colleges, technical colleges and universities, mostly in the United States. It is not an admission test and there is no pass or fail. Your college uses the results to place you in the right English-language (ESL or EAP) course, or to decide that you can go straight into regular college English.
The test is taken on a computer, usually at your college's testing center; some colleges may also offer remote testing. There is no time limit on the ESL tests. Your college decides which parts you take, so check your placement instructions before test day.
Who takes it?
New students whose first language is not English are often asked to take ACCUPLACER ESL when they apply to a community college. It is common for adult learners, recent immigrants, international students and high school graduates who are still learning English. Each college sets its own placement scores and retest rules, so the same score can lead to different courses at different colleges.
ACCUPLACER ESL format at a glance
| Test | What you do | Questions | Score |
|---|---|---|---|
| ESL Reading Skills | Read short passages (up to about 90 words) and answer literal and inference questions | 20, multiple choice | 20–120 |
| ESL Sentence Meaning | Choose the right word or phrase for a sentence, or answer a question about a one- or two-sentence text | 20, multiple choice | 20–120 |
| ESL Language Use | Complete sentences with the correct grammar and choose the best way to combine two sentences | 20, multiple choice | 20–120 |
| ESL Listening | Look at a picture of the speakers, listen to a conversation or short lecture, then answer a question | 20, multiple choice | 20–120 |
| WritePlacer ESL | Write an essay of about 300–600 words in answer to a short prompt | 1 essay | 1–6 |
The four multiple-choice tests are computer-adaptive: the next question gets harder or easier depending on your answers. In ESL Listening you can replay the conversation, the question and each answer choice up to two more times.
How ACCUPLACER ESL is scored
Each multiple-choice ESL test is reported on a 20–120 scale. College Board describes typical skills at different points: for example, in Reading Skills a score around 57 means you can find information stated in a passage, around 82 means you can draw conclusions and find the main idea, and around 102 means you can understand a passage as a whole, including the author's purpose and tone. WritePlacer ESL essays are scored automatically from 1 to 6 on organization and development, word use, sentence use and grammar; an essay that cannot be scored gets 0.
Your college, not College Board, decides which course each score leads to and whether and when you may retest.
How to prepare with 7ESL
Our ACCUPLACER ESL practice tests follow the public format of all five parts, and each part has its own page:
- ESL Reading Skills, ESL Sentence Meaning and ESL Language Use, 20 questions each with explanations.
- ESL Listening, with audio, a picture of the speakers and the same replay limit as the real test.
- WritePlacer ESL, with a Score 6 model essay and Score 4 and Score 2 samples for every prompt.
The multiple-choice parts are marked instantly and give an unofficial 20–120 estimate. Because our tests are fixed forms, the questions go roughly from easy to hard instead of adapting to you. 7ESL Pro members can also have their essay scored by the AI examiner.
Tips for test day
- There is no time limit, so read every question carefully. Because the tests are adaptive, you normally cannot go back and change an answer once you move on.
- In Language Use sentence-combining questions, choose the sentence that keeps the original meaning and is also short and correct.
- In Listening, use your replays for the part you missed, not for the whole conversation every time.
- For WritePlacer ESL, spend a few minutes planning, write at least 300 words in several paragraphs, and leave time to check verb forms, articles and punctuation.

ACCUPLACER ESL — frequently asked questions
What is on the ACCUPLACER ESL test?
ACCUPLACER ESL has five parts: ESL Reading Skills, ESL Sentence Meaning, ESL Language Use and ESL Listening, which have 20 multiple-choice questions each, and WritePlacer ESL, an essay of about 300 to 600 words. Your college chooses which parts you take.
Is ACCUPLACER ESL timed?
No. College Board does not set a time limit on the ESL tests, although your college may set its own limit. On 7ESL each part shows a suggested practice time, and you can take as long as you need.
How is ACCUPLACER ESL scored?
Each multiple-choice test is scored from 20 to 120, and WritePlacer ESL from 1 to 6 (0 for an essay that cannot be scored). There is no pass or fail: your college uses the scores to place you in an English course. On 7ESL, the multiple-choice parts give an unofficial 20-120 estimate from your number of correct answers.
Why does the real test feel different from a practice test?
The real ACCUPLACER ESL tests are computer-adaptive: each question depends on how you answered the one before, so no two students see the same test. Our practice tests are fixed forms that cover the same question types and move from easier to harder questions, so they are good preparation but cannot copy the adaptive experience exactly.
How many ACCUPLACER ESL practice tests are there on 7ESL?
There are 10 ACCUPLACER ESL practice tests. Each one has all five parts: 80 multiple-choice questions with explanations and one WritePlacer ESL prompt with three sample essays. The first 3 tests are free; the other 7 come with 7ESL Pro.
Can I get my WritePlacer ESL essay scored?
Every essay prompt comes with a Score 6 model essay and Score 4 and Score 2 samples with comments, so anyone can compare their work. 7ESL Pro members can also send their essay to the AI examiner for a 1-6 estimate with feedback on organization, word use, sentence use and grammar. It is a practice estimate, not an official score.
Are these official ACCUPLACER tests?
No. These are original 7ESL practice materials written to follow the public format of ACCUPLACER ESL. 7ESL is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, College Board.
