C1 Advanced (CAE) Writing Practice Tests

Your class has attended a panel discussion on what cities should do to persuade people to use public transport instead of cars. You have made the notes below.

Ways of persuading people to use public transport:
- reducing fares
- improving the quality of services
- restricting car use in city centres

Some opinions expressed in the discussion:
“Make it cheap enough and people will come.”
“Nobody chooses a bus that never turns up.”
“Drivers only change when driving becomes the harder option.”

Write an essay discussing TWO of the ways in your notes. You should explain which way would be more effective in persuading people to use public transport, giving reasons in support of your answer. You may, if you wish, make use of the opinions expressed in the discussion, but you should use your own words as far as possible. Write your essay in 220-260 words.
