Speaking

Part 1 — Free conversation

The interview begins with a short free conversation. The examiner asks you a few simple questions about yourself. Answer naturally in two or three sentences.

  1. Could you tell us a little about yourself? Example: Sure. I'm a graduate student in environmental engineering, and I'm currently researching ways to reduce water loss in city pipe networks. Outside of my studies, I play the cello in a community orchestra, which is a nice break from spreadsheets.
  2. What do you like to do when you have a free weekend? Example: If the weather's good, I usually go hiking in the mountains outside the city. It helps me clear my head after a busy week. On rainy weekends I tend to catch up on reading, mostly history and the occasional detective novel.

Part 2 — Speech and Q&A

You will be given a card with FIVE topics. Choose ONE topic and prepare a speech for one minute. You may take notes, but you may not write out the whole speech. Then speak for about two minutes on the topic you chose. After your speech, the examiners will ask you questions about it.

About the Grade 1 Speaking paper

An interview of about 10 minutes: a short free conversation, then choose one of five social topics, prepare for one minute, give a two-minute speech and answer the examiners' questions. Model speeches for every topic.

How Grade 1 is scored

EIKEN reports every skill on the EIKEN CSE scale and decides a pass from the CSE total, so there is no fixed pass mark in raw answers. For Grade 1, the first stage (Reading, Writing and Listening) and the interview are each passed on their own CSE total. On 7ESL, Reading and Listening give an instant practice score; each writing task has a full-mark model answer and three sample answers marked on the official criteria, and Pro members can have their answer scored by the AI examiner. Speaking comes with model answers for every question.
