In recent years, more and more people have started using smartphone apps to sell things that they no longer need, such as clothes, books, and furniture. Selling an item is easy: users simply take a photo, write a short description, and wait for a buyer.

What are the good points of these apps? Sellers can earn some extra money from things that would otherwise stay in a closet or be thrown away. Buyers can often find good products at much lower prices than in stores. Moreover, because items are used again, less waste is produced.

However, there are also some problems. Sometimes the items that arrive are in worse condition than the photos showed, and it can be difficult for buyers to get their money back. In addition, selling many items takes a lot of time, because sellers have to answer questions from buyers and pack and send each item themselves.

Speaking

Part 1 — Interview (question card)

The interview takes about 7 minutes. After a short greeting you receive a card with a passage and three pictures. Read the passage silently for 20 seconds, then read it aloud. Answer No. 1 about the passage. For No. 2, you have 20 seconds to prepare, then describe the three pictures as a story, beginning with the sentence on the card. Then turn the card over and answer No. 3 and No. 4, which ask for your own opinion and reasons.

  1. Please read the passage silently for 20 seconds. … All right. Now, please read it aloud. Example: Plastic bags are convenient, but they create a large amount of waste. Many of them end up in rivers and oceans, where they can harm wildlife. Nowadays, a growing number of stores charge customers for plastic bags. Many shoppers now carry their own bags, and by doing so they help to reduce plastic waste. Such efforts are becoming common around the world.
  2. Now, I will ask you four questions. No. 1. According to the passage, how do many shoppers help to reduce plastic waste? Example: By carrying their own bags.
  3. No. 2. Now, please look at the pictures and describe the situation. You have 20 seconds to prepare. Your story should begin with the sentence on the card. … Please begin. Example: One day, Mr. and Mrs. Mori were talking in their living room. Mrs. Mori showed her husband a notice about plastic bags and said to him, "Let's buy some shopping bags." On Sunday, they were choosing cloth shopping bags at a store. That evening, Mr. Mori was paying at a supermarket. He realized that he had left his new shopping bag at home.
  4. Now, please turn over the card and put it down. No. 3. Some people say that companies should stop selling drinks in plastic bottles. What do you think about that? Example: I agree. Plastic bottles are one of the biggest causes of pollution in the ocean. Companies could sell drinks in cans or glass bottles instead, because these are easier to recycle.
  5. No. 4. Today, many people buy things online. Do you think online shopping will become more popular than shopping in stores in the future? Example: Yes. (Why?) People are very busy these days, and online shopping saves a lot of time. Also, it is easy to compare prices on the Internet, so people can find cheaper products.

The three Grade 2 papers

EIKEN Grade 2 is made up of three papers, exactly as in the real exam. You can sit a whole test or practise one paper at a time:

How Grade 2 is scored

EIKEN reports every skill on the EIKEN CSE scale and decides a pass from the CSE total, so there is no fixed pass mark in raw answers. For Grade 2, the first stage (Reading, Writing and Listening) and the interview are each passed on their own CSE total. On 7ESL, Reading and Listening give an instant practice score; each writing task has a full-mark model answer and three sample answers marked on the official criteria, and Pro members can have their answer scored by the AI examiner. Speaking comes with model answers for every question.

What is EIKEN Grade 2?

EIKEN Grade 2 is the high school graduate level of EIKEN, and the Eiken Foundation places it at CEFR B1. At this level you can understand and use the English needed in social life: articles on current topics, conversations at work and school, and short essays that give reasons. It is one of the most popular goals for high school students in Japan, because many universities consider Grade 2 or higher in their entrance exams. Adults also use it to show a solid intermediate level for work.

The first stage is a Reading and Writing booklet plus Listening, and those who pass take a face-to-face interview. In the 2026 school year the paper-based first stage is held on 31 May 2026, 4 October 2026 and 24 January 2027. You can also take this grade as EIKEN S-CBT, a computer-based version held on most weekends, with the same content, difficulty and scoring; the speaking part is recorded through a headset instead of a live interview.

EIKEN Grade 2 format at a glance

PaperWhat you doTime
Reading and Writing31 reading questions (17 vocabulary and phrase gaps, two passages with 3 gaps each, an email and an article), then a summary of 45–55 words and an opinion essay of 80–100 words85 minutes
Listening30 questions: 15 dialogues and 15 short passages, each played once with four printed choicesabout 25 minutes
Interview (second stage)Read a card of about 60 words aloud, answer a question on it, describe a three-picture story, then answer two opinion questionsabout 7 minutes

What changed in 2024 and 2025

In the 2024 renewal, Grade 2 gained a summary task: you read a short text of several paragraphs and summarize its main points in 45–55 words. To make room, seven reading questions were removed (three vocabulary gaps and four comprehension questions), while the 85-minute time limit stayed the same. Listening and the interview did not change.

In the 2025 school year, Grade Pre-2 Plus was added just below Grade 2. It uses the same structure with easier content, so if Grade 2 feels too hard, Pre-2 Plus is a good way to practise this format first.

How Grade 2 is scored

Each skill is converted to an EIKEN CSE score of up to 650. You pass the first stage with 1520 out of 1950 and the interview with 460 out of 650. Reading, Writing and Listening count equally, so the two writing tasks carry a full third of the first-stage score.

Grade 2 can also help with study abroad. Some schools in countries such as the USA, Canada and Australia accept EIKEN, and the Foundation's Grade 2A certificate is given to Grade 2 passers with a four-skill CSE total of 2150 or more.

How to prepare with 7ESL

Every 7ESL practice test for this grade is a complete test in the current format, with new topics in every test. You can take a whole test or practise one paper:

  • Reading and Writing: the full booklet with a timer, instant marking and an explanation for every reading question, plus a full-mark model and three scored sample answers for each writing task. 7ESL Pro members can have their writing scored by the AI examiner on the EIKEN criteria.
  • Listening: audio played the same number of times as in the real test, with instant marking.
  • Speaking: the interview card, the examiner's questions as audio and model answers.

Tip: for the opinion essay, choose the side you can support most easily, give two clear reasons, and finish with a short conclusion.

EIKEN Grade 2 — frequently asked questions

What is EIKEN Grade 2?

EIKEN Grade 2 is one level of EIKEN, the Test in Practical English Proficiency run by the Eiken Foundation of Japan. It is aimed at high school graduate level (about CEFR B1). The first stage is a Reading and Writing booklet with one time limit plus a Listening test; candidates who pass it take a face-to-face speaking interview.

How many EIKEN Grade 2 practice tests are there?

There are 5 full-length EIKEN Grade 2 practice tests on 7ESL, each with Reading and Writing, Listening and Speaking in the current format and new topics every time. The first 2 tests are free; the other 3 come with 7ESL Pro.

How is EIKEN Grade 2 scored?

EIKEN converts each skill to the EIKEN CSE score, and a pass is decided by the total CSE score of each stage, not by a fixed number of correct answers. Writing is marked on content, organization, vocabulary and grammar, and the interview is marked by the examiners on the official speaking criteria. On 7ESL, Reading and Listening are marked instantly as a practice score; the writing tasks come with a full-mark model and three scored sample answers, and Pro members can ask the AI examiner for a score on the EIKEN criteria.

Are the listening choices printed?

The question itself is only heard, and the four answer choices are printed. Every recording is played once, as in the real test.

Are these official EIKEN tests?

No. They are original 7ESL practice materials written in the public EIKEN format. 7ESL is not affiliated with the Eiken Foundation of Japan.
