The three Grade 4 papers
EIKEN Grade 4 is made up of three papers, exactly as in the real exam. You can sit a whole test or practise one paper at a time:
How Grade 4 is scored
EIKEN reports every skill on the EIKEN CSE scale and decides a pass from the CSE total, so there is no fixed pass mark in raw answers. For Grade 4, Reading and Listening make up the test result, and the computer speaking test is reported separately as pass or fail. On 7ESL, Reading and Listening give an instant practice score. Speaking comes with model answers for every question.
What is EIKEN Grade 4?
EIKEN Grade 4 is the second step of EIKEN, the Test in Practical English Proficiency run by the Eiken Foundation of Japan. Its official level is junior high school intermediate: you can understand simple English and use it to talk about familiar things, such as school events, weekend plans, family and friends. Most candidates are second-year junior high school students or strong primary school learners, together with adult beginners who have finished Grade 5.
Like Grade 5, Grade 4 is a beginner grade. EIKEN's CEFR guidance starts one step higher, at Grade 3 (A1). There is no interview: you take a Reading and a Listening paper, plus an optional online speaking test. In the 2026 school year the paper-based first stage is held on 31 May 2026, 4 October 2026 and 24 January 2027.
EIKEN Grade 4 format at a glance
| Paper | What you do | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Reading | 35 questions: 15 word and grammar gaps, 5 conversation gaps, 5 word-order questions, and 10 questions on a notice, an email exchange and a short story | 35 minutes |
| Listening | 30 questions in 3 parts: choosing the reply to a conversation, questions on conversations, and questions on short talks; everything is played twice | about 30 minutes |
| Speaking test | Read a card of about 25 words aloud, then answer 2 questions about the passage, 1 about the picture and 1 about yourself; recorded online | about 4 minutes |
The biggest step up from Grade 5 is the reading section at the end of the paper, where you read real-life texts and answer questions about them. In Listening Part 1, the three replies are only spoken, not printed.
Did the 2024 renewal or Grade Pre-2 Plus change Grade 4?
No. The 2024 renewal changed the grades from Grade 3 upward, where a second writing task was added. Grade 4 kept the same format, timing and number of questions. Grade Pre-2 Plus, the new grade added in the 2025 school year between Grade Pre-2 and Grade 2, is also well above Grade 4.
If Grade 4 goes well, plan for the jump to Grade 3. It adds an email reply of 15–25 words, a short opinion with two reasons, and a face-to-face interview, so start writing short answers in English now.
How Grade 4 is scored
Your Reading and Listening answers are converted to the EIKEN CSE score, up to 500 for each skill. You pass Grade 4 when your total reaches 622 out of 1000. The CSE conversion means the number of correct answers needed can vary slightly between sessions, so aim for a clear margin in practice.
The speaking test is optional and does not affect whether you pass the grade. You can take it on a computer, tablet or smartphone during the testing period, whether or not you passed the written test, and the result is shown online as pass or fail with a CSE score.
How to prepare with 7ESL
Every 7ESL practice test for this grade is a complete test in the current format, with new topics in every test. You can take a whole test or practise one paper:
- Reading: all four parts with a 35-minute timer and instant marking.
- Listening: every part played twice, with Part 1 choices read aloud.
- Speaking: the card, the questions as audio and a model answer for each one.
Tip: in the reading texts, read the question first, then find the matching part of the notice, email or story.

EIKEN Grade 4 — frequently asked questions
What is EIKEN Grade 4?
EIKEN Grade 4 is one level of EIKEN, the Test in Practical English Proficiency run by the Eiken Foundation of Japan. It is aimed at junior high school intermediate level (about CEFR A1). It has a Reading test and a Listening test, plus a separate recorded speaking test on a computer.
How many EIKEN Grade 4 practice tests are there?
There are 5 full-length EIKEN Grade 4 practice tests on 7ESL, each with Reading, Listening and Speaking in the current format and new topics every time. The first 2 tests are free; the other 3 come with 7ESL Pro.
How is EIKEN Grade 4 scored?
EIKEN converts each skill to the EIKEN CSE score, and a pass is decided by the total CSE score of each stage, not by a fixed number of correct answers. The speaking test is reported separately as pass or fail. On 7ESL, Reading and Listening are marked instantly as a practice score.
Are the listening choices printed?
In Grade 5 and Grade 4 Part 1 (and Grade 5 Part 3) the three answer choices are only heard, never printed, and everything is played twice. Our player reads them aloud in the same way: choose 1, 2 or 3.
Are these official EIKEN tests?
No. They are original 7ESL practice materials written in the public EIKEN format. 7ESL is not affiliated with the Eiken Foundation of Japan.
7ESL practice material written in the public EIKEN format (2024 renewal). 7ESL is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, the Eiken Foundation of Japan. EIKEN is a registered trademark of the Eiken Foundation of Japan. Practice scores are not EIKEN CSE scores and do not predict a pass.
