The three Grade 5 papers

EIKEN Grade 5 is made up of three papers, exactly as in the real exam. You can sit a whole test or practise one paper at a time:

How Grade 5 is scored

EIKEN reports every skill on the EIKEN CSE scale and decides a pass from the CSE total, so there is no fixed pass mark in raw answers. For Grade 5, Reading and Listening make up the test result, and the computer speaking test is reported separately as pass or fail. On 7ESL, Reading and Listening give an instant practice score. Speaking comes with model answers for every question.

What is EIKEN Grade 5?

EIKEN Grade 5 is the first step on the EIKEN ladder, the Test in Practical English Proficiency run by the Eiken Foundation of Japan. The Foundation describes it as junior high school beginner level: you can understand and use very basic English about yourself, your family, school, hobbies, shopping and the weather. Typical candidates are primary school children and first-year junior high school students in Japan, but it also suits adults who are starting English from zero.

EIKEN's CEFR guidance starts at Grade 3 (A1), so Grade 5 is best seen as a first milestone on the way to A1. There is no interview at this grade: the test is a Reading paper and a Listening paper, plus an optional speaking test that you take online. In the 2026 school year the paper-based first stage is held on 31 May 2026, 4 October 2026 and 24 January 2027.

EIKEN Grade 5 format at a glance

PaperWhat you doTime
Reading25 questions: 15 word and grammar gaps, 5 conversation gaps and 5 word-order questions25 minutes
Listening25 questions in 3 parts: replies to a line with a picture, short conversations, and choosing the sentence that matches a picture; everything is played twiceabout 20 minutes
Speaking testRead a card of about 20 words aloud, answer 2 questions about it and 1 about yourself; recorded on a computer, tablet or smartphoneabout 3 minutes

In the real test, the instructions are in Japanese, and the word-order questions give the meaning of the sentence in Japanese. In Listening Parts 1 and 3, the answer choices are only spoken, not printed.

Did the 2024 renewal or Grade Pre-2 Plus change Grade 5?

No. The 2024 renewal of EIKEN changed Grade 3 and above: those grades gained a second writing task and, at most of them, lost some reading questions. Grade 5 kept its format. The new Grade Pre-2 Plus, added in the 2025 school year, sits much higher on the ladder, between Grade Pre-2 and Grade 2, so it does not affect Grade 5 either.

It is still useful to know what comes next. Grade 4 adds longer reading texts, and Grade 3 adds two short writing tasks, an email reply and an opinion, and a face-to-face interview.

How Grade 5 is scored

EIKEN reports results on the EIKEN CSE score. At Grade 5, Reading and Listening are each worth up to 425, and you pass when your total reaches 419 out of 850. Because raw scores are converted to CSE scores, the number of correct answers you need can change a little from session to session.

The speaking test is separate. Everyone who applied for Grade 5 can take it during the testing period, even if they did not pass the written test. Its result, pass or fail with a CSE score, appears online and does not change whether you pass the grade. You can take it only once per session.

How to prepare with 7ESL

Every 7ESL practice test for this grade is a complete test in the current format, with new topics in every test. You can take a whole test or practise one paper:

  • Reading: all three parts with a 25-minute timer and instant marking.
  • Listening: every part played twice, with spoken answer choices read aloud as in the real test.
  • Speaking: the card, the questions as audio and a model answer for each question.

Tip: use the first playing of each listening item to get the general idea and the second to check your answer.

EIKEN Grade 5 — frequently asked questions

What is EIKEN Grade 5?

EIKEN Grade 5 is one level of EIKEN, the Test in Practical English Proficiency run by the Eiken Foundation of Japan. It is aimed at junior high school beginner level (about CEFR A1). It has a Reading test and a Listening test, plus a separate recorded speaking test on a computer.

How many EIKEN Grade 5 practice tests are there?

There are 5 full-length EIKEN Grade 5 practice tests on 7ESL, each with Reading, Listening and Speaking in the current format and new topics every time. The first 2 tests are free; the other 3 come with 7ESL Pro.

How is EIKEN Grade 5 scored?

EIKEN converts each skill to the EIKEN CSE score, and a pass is decided by the total CSE score of each stage, not by a fixed number of correct answers. The speaking test is reported separately as pass or fail. On 7ESL, Reading and Listening are marked instantly as a practice score.

Are the listening choices printed?

In Grade 5 and Grade 4 Part 1 (and Grade 5 Part 3) the three answer choices are only heard, never printed, and everything is played twice. Our player reads them aloud in the same way: choose 1, 2 or 3.

Are these official EIKEN tests?

No. They are original 7ESL practice materials written in the public EIKEN format. 7ESL is not affiliated with the Eiken Foundation of Japan.
