Speaking

Part 1 — Interview (question card)

The examiner gives you a card with a short passage and a three-picture story. First read the passage silently for 20 seconds, then read it aloud. No. 1 asks about the passage. For No. 2, you have 20 seconds to prepare, then tell the story in the pictures, starting with the sentence on the card. Then you turn the card over and answer two questions giving your own opinion (No. 3 and No. 4). The interview takes about 7 minutes.

  1. Please read the passage silently for 20 seconds. … All right. Now, please read it aloud. Example: Today, many community centers hold cooking classes for children. At these classes, children learn how to prepare simple and healthy meals. Some parents send their children to such classes, and by doing so they help their children become more independent. Learning to cook can also teach children about the importance of food.
  2. Please look at the passage. According to the passage, how do some parents help their children become more independent? Example: By sending their children to cooking classes.
  3. Now, please look at the picture and describe the situation. You have 20 seconds to prepare. Your story should begin with the sentence on the card. Example: One day, Kenta and his mother were looking at a poster at the community center. Kenta said to his mother, "I want to try this cooking class." At the class, the teacher was showing the children how to cut vegetables, and Kenta was cutting carrots. That evening, Kenta was cooking dinner at home. He was imagining his family enjoying the curry he made.
  4. Now, please turn over the card and put it down. Do you think children should help their parents with housework more often? Example: Yes. (Why?) Parents are very busy with work these days. If children help with cleaning or washing the dishes, their parents can relax a little, and the children also learn useful skills.
  5. Today, many people buy ready-made meals at supermarkets and convenience stores. Do you think people should cook at home more often? Example: Yes. (Why?) Food that people cook at home is usually healthier than ready-made meals. Also, cooking at home is cheaper, so people can save money.

The three Grade Pre-2 Plus papers

EIKEN Grade Pre-2 Plus is made up of three papers, exactly as in the real exam. You can sit a whole test or practise one paper at a time:

How Grade Pre-2 Plus is scored

EIKEN reports every skill on the EIKEN CSE scale and decides a pass from the CSE total, so there is no fixed pass mark in raw answers. For Grade Pre-2 Plus, the first stage (Reading, Writing and Listening) and the interview are each passed on their own CSE total. On 7ESL, Reading and Listening give an instant practice score; each writing task has a full-mark model answer and three sample answers marked on the official criteria, and Pro members can have their answer scored by the AI examiner. Speaking comes with model answers for every question.

What is EIKEN Grade Pre-2 Plus?

EIKEN Grade Pre-2 Plus is the newest EIKEN grade, first held in the 2025 school year. The Eiken Foundation created it because the jump from Grade Pre-2 to Grade 2 was too big: learners needed about 21 months on average to move between them, compared with about a year for the other steps. Pre-2 Plus gives a goal in the middle, at an upper high school level. Its tasks deal with familiar social topics, such as streaming services or animal therapy programs, rather than only personal topics.

On the CEFR, Grade Pre-2 Plus is an upper A2 grade and a bridge toward B1, the level of Grade 2. Typical candidates are high school students who have passed Pre-2 and adults building toward Grade 2. In the 2026 school year the paper-based first stage is held on 31 May 2026, 4 October 2026 and 24 January 2027. You can also take this grade as EIKEN S-CBT, a computer-based version held on most weekends, with the same content, difficulty and scoring; the speaking part is recorded through a headset instead of a live interview.

EIKEN Grade Pre-2 Plus format at a glance

PaperWhat you doTime
Reading and Writing31 reading questions (17 vocabulary gaps, two passages with 3 gaps each, an email and an article), then a summary of 25–35 words and an opinion of 50–60 words85 minutes
Listening30 questions: 15 conversations and 15 short passages, each played once with four printed choicesabout 25 minutes
Interview (second stage)Read a card aloud, answer a question on it, tell a three-picture story, then answer two opinion questionsabout 7 minutes

How Pre-2 Plus fits the renewed EIKEN

Pre-2 Plus was designed after the 2024 renewal, so it follows the renewed pattern from the start. Its structure copies Grade 2: the same number of reading and listening questions, the same 85-minute booklet, a summary task and an opinion task, and a three-picture story in the interview. The texts, vocabulary and word limits are easier.

For learners coming from Grade Pre-2, the big changes are the summary, which asks you to rewrite the key points of a short text in your own words, the listening test without spoken-only answer choices, and the picture story in the interview. For learners aiming at Grade 2, passing Pre-2 Plus shows that the Grade 2 format is already familiar.

How Grade Pre-2 Plus is scored

Each skill is converted to an EIKEN CSE score of up to 625. You pass the first stage with 1402 out of 1875, and the interview with 427 out of 625. Reading, Writing and Listening count equally in the first stage, so the two writing tasks are worth as much as all the reading questions together. The writing tasks are marked on content, organization, vocabulary and grammar.

How to prepare with 7ESL

Every 7ESL practice test for this grade is a complete test in the current format, with new topics in every test. You can take a whole test or practise one paper:

  • Reading and Writing: the full booklet with a timer, instant marking and an explanation for every reading question, plus a full-mark model and three scored sample answers for each writing task. 7ESL Pro members can have their writing scored by the AI examiner on the EIKEN criteria.
  • Listening: audio played the same number of times as in the real test, with instant marking.
  • Speaking: the interview card, the examiner's questions as audio and model answers.

Tip: in the summary, keep only the main points of each paragraph and use your own words; copying whole sentences from the text loses marks.

EIKEN converts each skill to the EIKEN CSE score, and a pass is decided by the total CSE score of each stage, not by a fixed number of correct answers.
