Speaking

Part 1 — Interview (question card)

Enter the room, greet the examiner and hand over your card. You are given a card with a short passage and two pictures. Read the passage silently for 20 seconds, then read it aloud. The examiner asks No.1 about the passage, No.2 about Picture A and No.3 about Picture B. Then you turn over the card and answer No.4 (your opinion) and No.5 (about you) without looking at the card. The interview takes about 6 minutes.

  1. Please read the passage aloud. Example: Many people these days carry reusable water bottles. These bottles are easy to wash and can be used again and again. Some stores now let customers fill their own bottles with water for free, and by doing so they help to reduce plastic waste. Reusable bottles will probably become even more popular.
  2. According to the passage, how do some stores help to reduce plastic waste? Example: By letting customers fill their own bottles with water for free.
  3. Now, please look at the people in Picture A. They are doing different things. Tell me as much as you can about what they are doing. Example: A woman is filling her bottle with water. A boy is flying a kite. A man is taking a picture. A girl is riding a bicycle. An old man is walking his dog.
  4. Now, look at the boy in Picture B. Please describe the situation. Example: He forgot to bring his water bottle, so he can't drink anything.
  5. Now, please turn over the card and put it down. Do you think towns should put more drinking fountains in parks? Example: Yes. (Why?) People can fill their own bottles for free. Then they will buy fewer drinks in plastic bottles.
  6. Many towns have parks where people can relax. Do you like to spend time in parks? Example: Yes. (Please tell me more.) There is a big park near my house. I often play badminton there with my friends on weekends.

The three Grade Pre-2 papers

EIKEN Grade Pre-2 is made up of three papers, exactly as in the real exam. You can sit a whole test or practise one paper at a time:

How Grade Pre-2 is scored

EIKEN reports every skill on the EIKEN CSE scale and decides a pass from the CSE total, so there is no fixed pass mark in raw answers. For Grade Pre-2, the first stage (Reading, Writing and Listening) and the interview are each passed on their own CSE total. On 7ESL, Reading and Listening give an instant practice score; each writing task has a full-mark model answer and three sample answers marked on the official criteria, and Pro members can have their answer scored by the AI examiner. Speaking comes with model answers for every question.

What is EIKEN Grade Pre-2?

EIKEN Grade Pre-2 is the high school intermediate level of EIKEN. You can understand and use the English needed in everyday life: reading emails and short articles, following conversations about school, travel and shopping, and giving a simple opinion with reasons. The Eiken Foundation places it at CEFR A2. Typical candidates are high school students in their first or second year and strong junior high school students, as well as adults who want a clear A2 certificate.

The first stage is a Reading and Writing booklet plus Listening, and those who pass it take a face-to-face interview. In the 2026 school year the paper-based first stage is held on 31 May 2026, 4 October 2026 and 24 January 2027. You can also take this grade as EIKEN S-CBT, a computer-based version held on most weekends, with the same content, difficulty and scoring; the speaking part is recorded through a headset instead of a live interview.

EIKEN Grade Pre-2 format at a glance

PaperWhat you doTime
Reading and Writing29 reading questions (vocabulary and idioms, conversation gaps, a passage with gaps, an email and an article), then an email reply of 40–50 words and an opinion of 50–60 words80 minutes
Listening30 questions: replies that are only heard, then conversations and passages with four printed choices; everything is played onceabout 25 minutes
Interview (second stage)Read a card of about 50 words aloud, answer a question on it, describe a picture, then give your opinion and answer a question about your own lifeabout 6 minutes

What changed in 2024 and 2025

In the 2024 renewal, Grade Pre-2 gained an email task alongside the opinion essay. In it, you reply to an email, answer its question and ask your own questions about a topic it mentions. To make room, eight reading questions were removed (five vocabulary and grammar gaps and three gaps in the longer passages), and the Reading and Writing time grew from 75 to 80 minutes. Listening and the interview stayed the same.

From the 2025 school year, Grade Pre-2 Plus sits between Grade Pre-2 and Grade 2. After passing Pre-2, you can aim for Pre-2 Plus as a smaller step instead of going straight to Grade 2.

How Grade Pre-2 is scored

Each skill is converted to an EIKEN CSE score of up to 600. You pass the first stage with 1322 out of 1800 across Reading, Writing and Listening, and the interview with 406 out of 600. Writing counts as a full third of the first stage, so the two writing tasks deserve as much practice as the reading questions. The writing is marked on content, organization, vocabulary and grammar.

How to prepare with 7ESL

Every 7ESL practice test for this grade is a complete test in the current format, with new topics in every test. You can take a whole test or practise one paper:

  • Reading and Writing: the full booklet with a timer, instant marking and an explanation for every reading question, plus a full-mark model and three scored sample answers for each writing task. 7ESL Pro members can have their writing scored by the AI examiner on the EIKEN criteria.
  • Listening: audio played the same number of times as in the real test, with instant marking.
  • Speaking: the interview card, the examiner's questions as audio and model answers.

Tip: in Listening, everything is played only once, so read the printed choices before each recording starts.

EIKEN Grade Pre-2 — frequently asked questions

What is EIKEN Grade Pre-2?

EIKEN Grade Pre-2 is one level of EIKEN, the Test in Practical English Proficiency run by the Eiken Foundation of Japan. It is aimed at high school intermediate level (about CEFR A2). The first stage is a Reading and Writing booklet with one time limit plus a Listening test; candidates who pass it take a face-to-face speaking interview.

How many EIKEN Grade Pre-2 practice tests are there?

There are 5 full-length EIKEN Grade Pre-2 practice tests on 7ESL, each with Reading and Writing, Listening and Speaking in the current format and new topics every time. The first 2 tests are free; the other 3 come with 7ESL Pro.

How is EIKEN Grade Pre-2 scored?

EIKEN converts each skill to the EIKEN CSE score, and a pass is decided by the total CSE score of each stage, not by a fixed number of correct answers. Writing is marked on content, organization, vocabulary and grammar (the email task on content, vocabulary and grammar), and the interview on the content of the answers, pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar and attitude. On 7ESL, Reading and Listening are marked instantly as a practice score; the writing tasks come with a full-mark model and three scored sample answers, and Pro members can ask the AI examiner for a score on the EIKEN criteria.

Are the listening choices printed?

In Part 1 the three replies are only heard, not printed; in Parts 2 and 3 the four choices are printed. Everything is played once, and our player works the same way.

Are these official EIKEN tests?

No. They are original 7ESL practice materials written in the public EIKEN format. 7ESL is not affiliated with the Eiken Foundation of Japan.
