What is TELPAS?

TELPAS is the Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment System. Every spring, emergent bilingual students (English learners) in Texas public schools from kindergarten to grade 12 take it to show their progress in listening, speaking, reading and writing in English. Results help decide when a student no longer needs English language support. Kindergarten and grade 1 are rated by teachers in class; from grade 2 students take two online tests.

The two online tests

TestGrade clustersItems
Listening and Speaking2–3, 4–5, 6–8, 9–1227 listening questions + 10 recorded speaking tasks
Reading and Writing2, 3, 4–5, 6–7, 8–9, 10–1230–37 reading questions + 6 editing questions + 3 typed answers

Pick your grade cluster below. Each practice test follows the official item types, number of questions and order.

Proficiency levels

TELPAS reports four levels for each domain: Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced and Advanced High. After each 7ESL practice test you get a practice level estimate based on TEA's published cut points. It is a guide only, not an official rating.

Speaking and writing feedback

Every speaking and writing task has a model answer and scored sample answers, so every learner can compare. 7ESL Pro members can also get an AI examiner estimate with feedback based on the TELPAS rubrics.

TELPAS — frequently asked questions

Which TELPAS test should I choose?

Choose the test for your grade. Listening and Speaking has four clusters (2–3, 4–5, 6–8, 9–12); Reading and Writing has six (2, 3, 4–5, 6–7, 8–9, 10–12). For example, a grade 7 student takes Listening and Speaking 6–8 and Reading and Writing 6–7.

Are there TELPAS tests for kindergarten and grade 1?

No online test exists: kindergarten and grade 1 students are rated by their teachers from classroom observation, so 7ESL has no K–1 test.

Are these the official TELPAS tests?

No. They are original 7ESL practice tests written to follow the public TELPAS format. 7ESL is not affiliated with the Texas Education Agency.

Is TELPAS practice on 7ESL free?

The first two practice tests of every grade cluster are free, with no sign-up. 7ESL Pro opens all of them and adds AI examiner feedback on speaking and writing.

7ESL TELPAS practice tests are original practice materials written to follow the public format of the Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment System. 7ESL is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) or its test contractors. The level estimate is for practice only and is not an official TELPAS rating.
