Speaking Question 3 — Describe a picture

In this part of the test, you will describe the picture on your screen in as much detail as you can. You will have 45 seconds to prepare your response. Then you will have 30 seconds to speak about the picture.

  1. Describe the picture in as much detail as you can. Example: This picture was taken at an outdoor market on a sunny day. In the foreground, a vendor wearing a green apron is handing a paper bag to a customer. His stall is covered with crates of fresh fruit and vegetables, such as tomatoes and oranges. Behind them, several shoppers are walking between the stalls, and there are white canopies overhead. It looks like a busy, cheerful place to shop.

Speaking Question 4 — Describe a picture

In this part of the test, you will describe the picture on your screen in as much detail as you can. You will have 45 seconds to prepare your response. Then you will have 30 seconds to speak about the picture.

  1. Describe the picture in as much detail as you can. Example: This is a picture of four people having a meeting in an office conference room. A woman standing at the front is pointing at a bar chart on a large screen. The other three are sitting around a wooden table, and one man is taking notes on a laptop. There are coffee cups and some papers on the table, and through the window I can see other buildings. They seem to be discussing sales results.

Speaking Questions 5-7 — Respond to questions

In this part of the test, you will answer three questions. You will have three seconds to prepare after you hear each question. You will have 15 seconds to respond to Questions 5 and 6, and 30 seconds to respond to Question 7.

  1. How often do you go to a coffee shop, and who do you usually go with? Example: I go to a coffee shop about three times a week, usually before work. Most of the time I go alone, but on weekends I sometimes meet friends there.
  2. When you choose a coffee shop, what is more important to you: the price or the location? Why? Example: Location matters more to me. I buy coffee on my way to work, so the shop needs to be near my office or the subway. I don't mind paying a bit more.
  3. Some coffee shops offer a monthly plan: customers pay a fixed price and get one drink every day. Would you be interested in a plan like this? Why or why not? Example: Yes, I'd be interested. First, I already buy coffee almost every day, so a fixed monthly price would probably save me money. Second, it's convenient: I wouldn't have to pay each time, I could just pick up my drink and go. But I'd only sign up if the shop was near my home or office, or I wouldn't use it enough.

Speaking Questions 8-10 — Respond to questions using information provided

In this part of the test, you will answer three questions based on the information provided. You will have 45 seconds to read the information before the questions begin. You will have three seconds to prepare and 15 seconds to respond to Questions 8 and 9. You will hear Question 10 two times. You will have three seconds to prepare and 30 seconds to respond to Question 10.

  1. What day is the forum, and what time does registration begin? Example: Sure. The forum is on Thursday, October 15, at the Harborview Convention Center. Registration begins at 8:30 A.M., and breakfast is served at the same time.
  2. I'm really looking forward to the panel on hiring and training technicians before lunch. That's still happening, right? Example: I'm sorry, but that panel has been canceled. However, there's a workshop on reducing waste on the production line from 10:15 to 11:15 that morning, if you're interested.
  3. My company is thinking about investing in new technology. Could you tell me about the sessions in the afternoon that are about technology? Example: Sure. There are two afternoon sessions about technology. First, at 1:30, Mei Lin Tan is giving a presentation called Robotics for Small Manufacturers. Then, from 2:45 to 3:45, Samuel Adeyemi is leading a workshop on choosing supply chain software. Just note that the workshop has moved to Room 310; the other sessions are in Room 204.

Speaking Question 11 — Express an opinion

In this part of the test, you will give your opinion about a specific topic. Be sure to say as much as you can in the time allowed. You will have 45 seconds to prepare. Then you will have 60 seconds to speak.

  1. Some people prefer to learn a new skill by taking a class with a teacher. Others prefer to learn it by themselves using online videos and courses. Which way of learning do you think is better? Give reasons and examples to support your opinion. Example: In my opinion, taking a class with a teacher is the better way to learn a new skill. The main reason is feedback. When you learn by yourself online, nobody tells you what you're doing wrong, so you might repeat the same mistakes for months. A teacher notices those problems and shows you how to fix them. Another reason is motivation. With a fixed schedule and classmates, you're much more likely to keep going when you're busy. For example, last year I tried to learn graphic design from online videos, but I stopped after three weeks. Then I joined an evening class, and after two months I could design posters for my company. Of course, online courses are cheaper and more flexible, but for most people, a real class leads to better results.

The four TOEIC papers

TOEIC is made up of four papers, exactly as in the real exam. You can sit a whole test or practise one paper at a time:

How TOEIC is scored

TOEIC Listening & Reading is scored from 10 to 990 (5-495 for each section). TOEIC Speaking and TOEIC Writing are each scored from 0 to 200. On 7ESL, Listening and Reading are marked instantly, with an unofficial estimate on the 5-495 scale for each section. Speaking and Writing come with model answers and samples at different scores, and Pro members can have a written answer scored by the AI examiner.

What is the TOEIC?

The TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication) is a family of English tests made by ETS that measure the English people use at work and in daily life. The two main tests are separate:

  • TOEIC Listening & Reading: 200 multiple-choice questions on workplace and everyday situations.
  • TOEIC Speaking & Writing: a computer-based test of productive skills. The Speaking and Writing tests can be taken together or separately.

ETS maps TOEIC scores to CEFR levels from A1 to C1. Test dates, delivery options and booking are handled by ETS and its local offices, and they differ from country to country, so check the options where you live.

Who uses TOEIC scores?

According to ETS, more than 14,000 organisations in over 160 countries use TOEIC scores. Employers use them for hiring, promotion and overseas assignments, especially in parts of Asia, Europe and Latin America. Universities and business schools also use them, for example as a graduation requirement or for exchange programmes.

TOEIC is not a university admissions test in the way that IELTS or TOEFL are, and it is generally not used for visas: it is not a UK Secure English Language Test and is not on IRCC’s list for Canadian permanent residence. If you need English for a visa or a degree, check which tests that organisation accepts.

Listening & Reading has two hours of testing; with check-in and forms, plan for about two and a half hours.

TOEIC scores and what they mean

On TOEIC Listening & Reading, each section is scored from 5 to 495, for a total of 10 to 990. TOEIC Speaking and TOEIC Writing are each scored from 0 to 200. There is no pass or fail: each organisation decides what score it needs for a job or a programme.

ETS publishes minimum scores for each CEFR level. On Listening & Reading, for example:

  • B1: 275 in Listening and 275 in Reading (550 in total)
  • B2: 400 in Listening and 385 in Reading (785 in total)
  • C1: 490 in Listening and 455 in Reading (945 in total)

Scores do not formally expire, but ETS and its representatives re-issue and confirm results only for two years after the test, and many employers ask for a recent score.

How to prepare with 7ESL

Each 7ESL TOEIC practice test contains all four papers in the public format, and each paper has its own page:

  • Listening: 100 questions with audio in several English accents, played once, with instant marking and explanations.
  • Reading: 100 questions with a 75-minute timer and an unofficial 5–495 estimate.
  • Speaking: all 11 questions with preparation and response timers and model answers.
  • Writing: all 8 questions with sample answers at different score levels. 7ESL Pro members can have a written answer scored by the AI examiner.

Tips for TOEIC test day

  • In Listening Part 2, the first word of the question (who, when, why) usually tells you what kind of answer you need.
  • Reading is the section where most people run out of time. Answer the grammar questions quickly and save at least 50 minutes for Part 7.
  • Never leave a question blank: there is no penalty for a wrong answer.

TOEIC — frequently asked questions

What is the TOEIC?

TOEIC is an English test for the workplace, made by ETS. It has two separate tests: TOEIC Listening & Reading (200 multiple-choice questions, about two hours) and TOEIC Speaking & Writing (11 speaking and 8 writing questions). More than 14,000 organisations in over 160 countries use TOEIC scores for hiring, promotion, training and university programmes.

How is the TOEIC scored?

On the Listening & Reading test, Listening and Reading are each scored from 5 to 495, for a total of 10 to 990. On the Speaking & Writing tests, Speaking and Writing are each scored from 0 to 200. On 7ESL, Listening and Reading are marked instantly and give an unofficial estimate on the 5-495 scale; Speaking and Writing come with model answers and scored samples.

How many TOEIC practice tests are there on 7ESL?

There are 10 full-length TOEIC practice tests. Each one has all four papers in the official format: Listening (100 questions), Reading (100 questions), Speaking (11 questions) and Writing (8 questions), with audio scripts, explanations for every answer, and sample answers. The first 3 tests are free; the other 7 come with 7ESL Pro.

Do I have to take all four papers?

No. In the real exam, Listening & Reading is one test, and Speaking & Writing is another; many people take only Listening & Reading. On 7ESL, each paper has its own page, so you can practise any paper on its own.

Can I get my TOEIC writing scored?

Every writing question comes with a model answer and sample answers at different scores, with notes that explain the score. Pro members can also ask the AI examiner for a practice score and feedback. This is an estimate for practice only, not an official ETS score.

Are these official TOEIC tests?

No. These are original 7ESL practice materials written in the public TOEIC format. 7ESL is not affiliated with ETS.
