The four WIDA Grade 1 papers

The real test has four domains, taken in this order. Each has its own page:

How WIDA Grade 1 is scored

WIDA ACCESS gives a proficiency level from 1.0 (Entering) to 6.0 (Reaching) for each domain, plus Oral Language, Literacy, Comprehension and Overall composites. On 7ESL, Listening and Reading give an instant practice level; for Speaking and Writing you rate your answer against the model and the scored samples (or use the AI examiner, 7ESL Pro), and the full-test report shows the composites. Practice estimates only, not WIDA scores.

What is WIDA ACCESS Grade 1?

WIDA ACCESS (called ACCESS for ELLs until 2025) is the English language proficiency test that multilingual learners, also called English learners, take once a year in the US states and territories that use the WIDA standards, and in Department of Defense Education Activity schools. It is given in grade-level clusters, and WIDA ACCESS Grade 1 is the form for students in Grade 1. It measures the four domains of Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing in the English used in school: social and instructional language, language arts, mathematics, science and social studies.

Most students take the online test. Listening and Reading are adaptive, so the computer chooses easier or harder folders as the student answers; Speaking is recorded, and Writing is written by hand in Grades 1-3. A paper test with Tier A (easier) and Tier B/C forms is also available. Grade 1 is the first grade of the online test, and most children in it are still learning to read and write in any language. That is why the pictures carry so much of the meaning and the directions are read aloud.

The Grade 1 format at a glance

DomainWhat you doPractice time
Listening15 items in 5 folders; each recording is heard once, then about 20 seconds to answer25 minutes
Reading15 items in 5 folders with pictures, tables and short texts25 minutes
Speaking6 tasks in 3 folders; the model student answers first, then you record your answer once15 minutes
Writing2 tasks (Tier A in steps, then Tier B/C), handwritten35 minutes

Grade 1 has its own test form, separate from the other grades. Every listening and reading item has three picture choices, the reading directions are read aloud, and the Grade 1 writing tasks are short: finishing sentence frames with a word box, then writing one or two sentences of your own, and a picture story with a starter such as “One day …”. Children write by hand; online, a grown-up can type what the child wrote for our practice test.

What changed in 2025-26

The test got a new name (WIDA ACCESS) and new content written to the WIDA English Language Development Standards Framework, 2020 Edition. It covers five standards, social and instructional language plus language for language arts, mathematics, science and social studies, and four key language uses: narrate, inform, explain and argue. New scoring rubrics started in September 2025: writing is scored with score points from 0 to 7, and speaking is rated against the model student's answer. Every 7ESL test for Grade 1 follows this new format.

How WIDA ACCESS Grade 1 is scored

WIDA ACCESS reports a proficiency level from 1.0 to 6.0 for each domain: 1 Entering, 2 Emerging, 3 Developing, 4 Expanding, 5 Bridging and 6 Reaching. Listening and Reading are scored by the computer. Speaking is rated against the model student's answer as Exemplary, Strong, Adequate, Attempted or No response, and each writing task gets one score point from 0 to 7 on the WIDA Writing Scoring Rubric (2025). Spelling, capital letters and punctuation are not scored in writing.

The domain levels are combined into four composite scores: Oral Language (50% Listening + 50% Speaking), Literacy (50% Reading + 50% Writing), Comprehension (70% Reading + 30% Listening) and the Overall score (35% Reading + 35% Writing + 15% Listening + 15% Speaking). States use these results, together with other information, to decide when a student no longer needs English language support, and each state sets its own rule.

On 7ESL, Listening and Reading give an instant practice level from 1.0 to 6.0. For Writing and Speaking you rate your answer against the model and the scored samples (or ask the AI examiner, 7ESL Pro), and the full-test report shows the composites for Grade 1. These are practice estimates, not WIDA scores.

How to prepare with 7ESL

  • Listening: folders with a big picture, recordings in American English and a 20-second answer timer; in the full test each recording plays once.
  • Reading: the texts, tables and pictures of each folder, with an explanation for every answer.
  • Speaking: hear the teacher, listen to the model student Leo, then think and record your own answer. Compare it with the model answer and the list of what a strong answer does.
  • Writing: every task has a score-7 model answer, three scored samples and a checklist; 7ESL Pro members can have their writing scored by the AI examiner.

Tip: in Speaking and Writing, say or write more than the minimum. Use joining words such as because, so, but and if, and give a reason or an example for each idea.
