Getting Better at Advanced Vocabulary

What is the best way to learn advanced words that alter meaning, direction, or feeling? How do you learn these words without speaking to people directly, and how do you learn to put them in context as well? Just reading the dictionary doesn’t seem intuitive.

The best way to learn advanced words is to study them in context rather than memorizing dictionary definitions. Start with a small number of words and find several real sentences using each one.

Try writing your own sentences with the new words. You can also read articles, listen to podcasts, and notice how native speakers use those words. If you cannot speak with people directly, practice by describing situations aloud or writing short conversations yourself.

For example, don't just memorize the word β€œreluctant.” Learn how it works in a sentence: β€œShe was reluctant to accept the offer.” Then create your own example: β€œI was reluctant to leave early.”
