How do you teach English to a 2nd grade kid?
I’m teaching a 2nd grade kid English, but he hasn’t had proper schooling. How can I help him learn effectively?

With a 2nd grader, I’d keep the lessons very simple and interactive. Focus on basic words (colors, animals, numbers) and use games, pictures, and songs so it feels fun rather than like a formal lesson. Lots of repetition and encouragement will help the child build confidence.
For a 2nd grader without formal schooling, the key is keeping it visual and active rather than using textbooks. Focus on Phonics (letter sounds) and TPR (Total Physical Response)—where he does the action (like "jump" or "clap") as you say the word.
At that age, 20-minute "mini-lessons" with plenty of games and songs work best to build his confidence from scratch.
You might want to take a look at the Courses section on the 7ESL homepage; we have several curated options that would be a perfect fit for a Grade 2 student and help bridge that gap in formal schooling.
Hello, here’s a few things that worked for me: Stop "teaching" and just start playing. At that age, if it’s not fun, they’ll tune out in seconds.
- Get moving: Don’t just say "jump"—actually jump! Linking movement to sound makes the words stick way faster.
- Keep it real: Skip the flashcards. Point to his actual toys or snacks. Ask stuff like "Is the apple sweet?" or "Where’s your blue shoe?" It makes English feel like a part of life, not a chore.
- Gamify everything: Kids are suckers for a challenge. Play "Simon Says" or "I Spy." Throw in some stickers as prizes and he’ll be hooked.
Give this a shot and see if it works for you! :)
