What do people usually reply to “What’s up?”

Someone said “What’s up?” to me the other day and I didn’t know how to respond. Is it the same as “How are you?”

The short answer is: Not exactly. While "How are you?" is asking about your feelings, "What’s up?" is more like asking "What’s happening in your life right now?"
You can just say “Not much.” It's safe and you’ll fit right in ✌️✨

Haha, I feel you! The first time someone said that to me, I almost looked at the ceiling. Honestly, just say "Not much, you?" and you're good to go. It’s the "holy grail" of answers because it works every single time.
Just remember, "What's up?" is basically a "Hi" in disguise, so don't overthink it. And please, for the love of English, stay away from "I'm fine, thank you!" unless you want to sound like a 1990s textbook.
