How to use the IELTS Writing Checker
Choose the task type — Task 2 essay, Academic Task 1 report, or General Training Task 1 letter — paste the question, then paste your answer and press Check. Pasting the question matters: Task Response can only be judged against what was actually asked, and answers that drift off-task lose bands in the real test exactly as they do here. Word counts are checked automatically, and answers under the 150/250-word minimums are penalised on criterion one, as in the live exam.
Reading your result
The overall band is the average of the four criterion bands rounded up to the nearest half band — the official calculation. Look at the lowest criterion first: that is your ceiling, and the "improvements" listed under it are the fastest route up. The top fixes quote your exact sentences next to corrected versions, and the Band 8 rewrite of your weakest stretch shows you the target register and cohesion in your own content, which is far easier to learn from than a stranger's model essay.
An estimate, honestly labelled
This is an AI assessment calibrated against the public band descriptors. It is consistent — the same essay gets the same scores — and it is deliberately realistic: most competent practice essays land between 5.5 and 7, and Band 8+ is awarded only for genuinely skilful writing. But it is a study tool, not an official score: use it to track progress between practice tests and to find out exactly what to fix before you pay for the real thing. Frequently asked questions
How is the overall band calculated?
Each of the four criteria gets a whole band from 4 to 9; the overall estimate is their average rounded up to the nearest half band (6.25 becomes 6.5, 6.75 becomes 7.0) — the same arithmetic used in the real test.
Is this my real IELTS score?
No — it is a calibrated AI estimate against the public band descriptors. It is consistent and deliberately realistic, which makes it excellent for tracking progress, but only the official test gives an official score.
Should I paste the question as well as my answer?
Yes, whenever you can. Task Response is judged against what was asked, so with the question included the checker can spot missing parts and off-topic drift — the most common hidden band killers.
Does it handle both Task 1 and Task 2?
Yes: Task 2 essays, Academic Task 1 graph/process reports, and General Training Task 1 letters. Criterion one automatically switches between Task Response and Task Achievement, and the 150/250-word minimums are enforced accordingly.
