Here come the long e words and they are not stopping for anybody. The long e words category of the English language does not get the respect or the attention that it deserves. We have got some very big words in this section, big words like “perceive” and “conceit”. Just encase you do not know the definition of the word “conceit”, I’ll tell you.
“Conceit” means to have “excessive pride in oneself”. Now let’s grow the pride within ourselves by expanding our minds and learning about long e words. Trust me, within this category of words, things are not as simple as they may seem.
Long E Words
What Are Long E words?
Long e words have been around since the dawn of the English language itself. Oddly enough, the word “English” is not a long e word itself. It doesn’t even have any of the spelling conventions of a long e word. Long e words are called as such because when they are pronounced, they make a long e sound that drags out.
If you want to experience the letter e dragging itself through your ears then simply pronounce the word “ceiling”. Right from the start, we get the long e sound loud and proud for the whole world to hear. Long e sounds are spelled in a variety of ways. Don’t worry, for they are not as numerous as other long letter sections of the English language.
Ways to Spell Long E Words
Let’s get these patterns down nice and easy so that we can take our first steps on the road to mastering long e words. Why stop there? We should be mastering all long letter sections of the English language.
- E – You knew that this would be our first section. The lone letter e like in the word “evening”.
- EE – You got it, this letter likes to double down for greater effect. Double e words include “peel” and “speech”. Nobody wants to slip on a banana peel while delivering a speech.
- EA – Not the video game company but the vowel pairing that can be found in “feast”, “peach”, and “dreams”. What a lovely set of words.
- E_E – I hope this is the last time I see this pesky sandwich-loving consonant but I know it won’t be the last. “Delete” is our E_E word.
- IE – IE makes its appearance attached to the words “field” and “achieve”.
- EI – We have actually gone over this category in the beginning already. The words “perceive” and “conceit” should be enough to jog your memory.
- Y – One more the mysterious Y is here to give us the word “happy”.
