What Are Long Vowel Sounds?
Long vowels are vowel sounds that say the name of the vowel letter itself. For example, the letter a in cake or i in kite is pronounced using its letter name.
Long vowel sounds are commonly created in two main ways:
- Silent E (Magic E): A final e makes the vowel before it long, as in cake, kite, rope, and cube.
- Vowel Teams (Graphemes): Two or more letters work together to make one long vowel sound, such as ai, ea, igh, or ie.
- Long A – /eɪ/ as in cake, plane, rain
- Long E – /iː/ as in tree, eat, bee
- Long I – /aɪ/ as in kite, pie, bike
- Long O – /oʊ/ as in boat, nose, rope
- Long U – /juː/ or /uː/ as in cube, flute, mule
