Readability Checker

The 7ESL Readability Checker measures how easy your writing is to read and tells you the school grade level needed to understand it. Paste your text and it returns a Flesch Reading Ease score along with a grade level, both worked out from the length of your sentences and the number of syllables in your words. It is a quick, objective way to see whether your writing is clear enough for your readers, whether they are learners, customers, or a general audience.

How to use the Readability Checker

Type or paste your text into the box and press Check readability, or simply pause after typing and the tool checks automatically. It analyses your text and returns the scores in a moment. You can edit the text and check again as often as you like, watching the numbers improve as you shorten sentences and swap long words for simpler ones.

Reading the results

You get five figures. Reading ease is the Flesch Reading Ease score, where a higher number means easier text: roughly 70 and above is easy, 50 to 70 is moderate, and below 50 is difficult. Grade level estimates the US school grade a reader needs to follow the text, so a grade level of 8 means a typical thirteen-year-old could read it comfortably. Difficulty turns the ease score into a simple label of Easy, Moderate, or Difficult. The tool also shows the word and sentence counts it used, since both drive the scores.

How to write more readable text

Readability scores reward two things: shorter sentences and shorter words. If your score is low, look for long sentences and split them in two, and replace heavy words with plainer everyday ones where you can. Aim for the level that suits your audience: a reading ease of 60 to 70 suits most general writing, while content for English learners or a wide public should aim higher. The scores are a guide, not a rule, so use them alongside your own judgement about tone and meaning. For more detail you can pair this with the word counter and the syllable counter.
