How the times are calculated
Research on adult readers puts the average silent reading speed for non-fiction at roughly 238 words per minute, so that is the calculator's default. You can switch to a slower pace of 150 words per minute, closer to careful study reading or readers working in a second language, or a faster 300 words per minute for skimming-level speed. Speaking time uses 130 words per minute, a comfortable presentation pace that leaves room for emphasis and pauses; conversational speech is faster, but a speech delivered at conversational speed sounds rushed.
