How the reading ladder works

Every book sits on one of 29 levels, R1 to R29. The steps are small: at R1 a page shows one picture and names it in a word or two; by the top of the ladder a book has chapters, a contents page and a glossary. Each level is matched to a CEFR reading band, from Pre-A1 to B2, so parents and teachers can see where a book sits.

Listen first. A narrator reads the whole book and each word lights up as it is spoken; characters have their own voices. Then read. Turn the pages yourself and tap any word to hear it again. Then take the quiz – the questions check the main idea, details and new words, and every answer shows the page it comes from.

The first three books on every level are free for everyone; Pro opens all of them, without ads. Sign in to keep your progress on every device and earn XP. Teachers on the 7ESL Teacher plan can assign any book to a class and see each student’s score.

Looking by age? The levels match what English-speaking children read at school: ages 4–6, ages 6–7, ages 7–8, ages 8–10 and ages 10–13 – and learners of any age can read at any level. You can also browse by school grade or by age.
