Fifth-grade books sit at levels R20–R23. A book is twelve to fifteen hundred words; timelines, maps and charts carry part of the information, and the reader is asked how the writer knows what they claim, not only what they claim.
The grades are a guide, matched to the levels children read at school in the US (R20–R23 on the 7ESL ladder). Children read at different speeds, so start where the quiz feels comfortable and move up one level at a time. Older beginners and adult learners use the same books.
What the 35 books for 5th grade are about: how things work (8), earth, water & weather (6), nature & environment (4), biographies (4), adventure & mystery (2), and 8 more topics.
