At seven, a book tells a real story over twelve pages; characters speak in their own voices and the reader starts to guess what will happen next. Information books add a contents page, captions under the pictures and a short glossary. These books sit at levels R8–R12, about Grades 1–2.
With a seven year old, read the speech aloud together, taking a character each. Talking characters teach how sentences sound, and children start to use the punctuation to change their voice.

Questions about books for 7 year olds
Are these the same as 2nd grade books?
They overlap. Seven year olds are in first or second grade, so this page holds the end of the 1st grade books and the start of the 2nd grade ones.
My 7 year old reads well but skips words. What helps?
Turn the audio on and ask them to read along out loud with the narrator. Hearing the skipped word straight away fixes the habit faster than stopping to correct it.
Do the books have audio?
Yes. A narrator reads every page and each word lights up as it is spoken; characters have their own voices.
