At eight, a book runs to five to eight hundred words; stories are split into short chapters and non-fiction uses headings, labelled diagrams and a glossary – the same features children meet in school textbooks. These books sit at levels R12–R16, about Grades 2–3.

With an eight year old, look at the headings and diagrams before reading and guess what each part is about. It is the same skill their school textbooks will soon ask for.

Questions about books for 8 year olds

Are these the same as 3rd grade books?

Partly. Eight year olds are in second or third grade, so this page runs from the end of the 2nd grade books into the 3rd grade ones.

Should an 8 year old still use the audio?

Yes, for the first read. Listening to a longer book while following the words keeps the story moving; the second read is the one they do alone.

Do the books have audio?

Yes. A narrator reads every page and each word lights up as it is spoken; characters have their own voices.
