A2 books are where readers start to read for the story rather than for the words. Plots have a problem and a solution, characters argue and change their minds, and non-fiction books use headings, captions, labelled diagrams and a glossary – the features learners meet in school textbooks.

Books are voiced by a narrator plus a different voice for each character, so dialogue sounds like people talking. The quiz goes beyond "who" and "what" to main ideas, sequence, cause and effect and the meaning of words in context.

The ages and grades are a guide to how hard the reading is, matched to what children at school read in English. Learners of any age can read at any level.

What the 67 books at A2 are about: animals (12), how things work (9), earth, water & weather (7), nature & environment (5), history & long ago (5), and 13 more topics.
