The Basics of Soccer
Below are the main components that make up the game of soccer:
- The Field: Soccer is played on a rectangular field, usually between 90–120 meters long and 45–90 meters wide, with a goal at each end. The field includes important areas such as the center circle, penalty areas, and goal areas.
- The Ball: Soccer is played with a spherical ball. A standard size 5 soccer ball has a circumference of about 68–70 centimeters (27–28 inches), which equals a diameter of roughly 22 centimeters (about 9 inches). The ball is made from leather or synthetic materials for durability.
- The Teams: Each team has 11 players, including one goalkeeper. The goalkeeper is the only player allowed to use their hands, and only within their own penalty area. Outside the penalty area, the goalkeeper must follow the same rules as other players.
- The Game Duration: A standard match consists of two halves of 45 minutes, separated by a 15-minute halftime break. In some competitions, extra time or penalty kicks may be used to decide a winner if the match ends in a draw.
Key Concepts and Rules in Soccer
- Scoring a Goal: A goal is scored when the entire ball crosses the goal line between the goalposts and under the crossbar. The team that scores the most goals wins the match.
- Offside Rule: A player is in an offside position if they are in the opponent’s half of the field and closer to the opponent’s goal line than both the ball and the second-to-last defender at the moment the ball is passed to them. Being in an offside position results in an indirect free kick for the opposing team.
- Fouls and Free Kicks: Fouls include actions such as tripping, pushing, or deliberately handling the ball (except by the goalkeeper in their penalty area). Minor fouls usually result in a free kick, while serious fouls may lead to penalty kicks or yellow and red cards.
- Penalty Kicks: A penalty kick is awarded when a defending player commits a foul inside their own penalty area. The kick is taken from the penalty mark, with only the goalkeeper allowed to defend the goal.
- Corner Kicks and Throw-ins: A corner kick is awarded when the ball crosses the goal line after being touched last by a defending player. A throw-in is awarded when the ball goes out of play along the sideline.
- Teamwork and Strategy: Soccer relies heavily on teamwork, communication, and coordination. Teams use formations such as 4-4-2 or 4-3-3 to organize players and balance attacking and defensive strategies.
