Practise English conversation on your own
The hardest part of conversation practice is finding someone to talk to. Here the scene is your partner. In each of these 112 scenes you choose a role, hear the other speaker, and say your lines out loud when it is your turn. Then you play your recording next to the model and decide what to try again.
Every scene also has answer activities, where you reply to a question in your own words, and many have word-swap drills that change one part of a sentence so you can use it in new situations. The scenes cover everyday life, travel, study and work: ordering food, asking for help, making plans with friends, a phone call, a job interview.
New to English? Start with speaking practice for beginners; these scenes begin at Intermediate (B1). Pick a short scene at your level and play the dialogue once before you speak. If a line feels too long, repeat it in chunks first. Need ideas for free conversation afterwards? Our list of English conversation topics has questions for every level.
Role-play and comparing with the model are free, and your recordings stay in your browser. Teens and adults with 7ESL Pro can also ask for AI feedback on an answer. Listen first in beginner listening practice, and for children use speaking practice for kids.
Frequently asked questions
How can I practise English conversation without a partner?
Let the scene be your partner: hear the other speaker, say your lines, then answer questions in your own words. For scripted dialogues only, see role-play practice.
How do I go from scripted lines to free conversation?
Say the model lines first, then answer the questions in your own words and change details, like times, places and names. That small step from copying to choosing is where real conversation starts.
What should I talk about?
Start with everyday situations you really meet: shopping, travel, school, work and friends. For open discussion, try our English conversation topics.
How do I stop translating in my head?
Practise short, ready-made phrases until they come out automatically. Repeating and shadowing the model lines, then using them in role-play, builds that habit faster than reading word lists.
Is English conversation practice free?
Yes. Role-play, answering and comparing your recording with the model are free on almost every scene. AI feedback on your answers is part of 7ESL Pro, for teens and adults.
