Antonym Match
Pair five English words with their opposites. From hot/cold to overt/covert — A2 to C1 mix.
About Antonym Match
Antonym Match is a free daily English vocabulary game built around opposite-word pairs for ESL learners. The board shows two columns of five English words. Tap a word on the left, then tap its opposite on the right. A correct antonym pair locks in with colour and is removed; a wrong pair shakes red and stays on the board.
Clear all five pairs to win, and try to finish without any mistakes for the perfect-round bonus. Each daily puzzle is drawn from the 7ESL lexicon and tagged from A2 to C1 CEFR levels, with antonyms hand-curated so that every pair is a genuine opposite, not just "different-sounding" words. The mix includes simple A2 pairs like big/small and hot/cold, intermediate B1 pairs like accept/refuse and ancient/modern, and advanced C1 pairs like overt/covert and benevolent/malicious — so daily play steadily expands your range. The post-round reveal shows definitions, IPA pronunciation, part of speech and an example sentence for each word, plus a short note on the relationship (graded opposites vs complementary opposites).
For ESL learners, drilling antonyms is one of the strongest single ways to lock new vocabulary into long-term memory because every word is learned with its opposite anchor. Suits A2 to C1 learners, IELTS / TOEFL candidates and teachers. Free, no sign-up.

Frequently asked questions
How do I play Antonym Match?
Two columns of five English words appear. Tap a word on the left to select it, then tap the word on the right that means the opposite. If correct, the pair locks in with colour and disappears. If wrong, both cards shake red and stay on the board. Clear all five antonym pairs to win the round.
Are all the antonyms exact opposites?
They fall into two categories. Complementary opposites are exact — alive/dead, present/absent — there is no middle ground. Graded opposites sit on a scale — hot/cold, big/small — there are degrees in between. The post-round reveal labels which type each pair is, which is a useful piece of vocabulary theory for ESL writing tasks.
What CEFR level is this game?
The pool runs from A2 to C1, mixed in every round. Easier pairs like big/small or fast/slow keep beginners engaged, while harder pairs like overt/covert or benevolent/malicious push advanced learners. The mix means the same game stays interesting whether you are starting out or polishing C1 range.
Why are opposites good for vocabulary learning?
Learning a word with its opposite is one of the strongest memory anchors in language acquisition research. The brain stores related-but-contrasting items together, so recalling one tends to bring back the other. Antonym Match uses that effect deliberately — every round of five pairs locks in ten reinforced word-meaning links.
Is Antonym Match free?
Yes, fully free with no sign-up needed and no ads inside gameplay. You can play unlimited daily rounds as a guest. A free 7ESL account is only useful if you want to save your streak across phone and laptop or sync XP and progress with the rest of your 7ESL learning history.
