About Synonym Match

Synonym Match is a fast, free English vocabulary pair game made for ESL learners building richer word knowledge. The board shows two columns of five words each. Tap a word in the left column, then tap its synonym in the right column — a correct pair locks in with colour and is removed; a wrong pair shakes red and stays on the board.

Clear all five pairs to win, and try to do it without any mistakes for the perfect-round bonus. Each daily board is drawn from the 7ESL lexicon and tagged from B1 to C1 CEFR levels, so the synonym pairs are realistic and useful for intermediate to advanced learners — not pairs of words that "kind of" mean the same. The post-round reveal shows the full meaning of each pair with definitions, part of speech and example sentences for both words, plus a one-line note on the nuance between them (because true synonyms in English rarely exist).

For ESL learners this is one of the most efficient single-game ways to build active vocabulary fast: every round teaches five new word-meaning relationships and reinforces five more. Synonym Match suits B1 to C1 students enriching academic vocabulary, IELTS and TOEFL candidates broadening lexical range, and teachers running a vocabulary warm-up. Free to play, no sign-up.

Frequently asked questions

How does Synonym Match work?

Two columns of five English words appear on screen. Tap a word in the left column to select it (it highlights), then tap the word on the right that has the closest matching meaning. If you are right, both cards lock in with colour and disappear. If not, both shake red and stay on the board so you can try again. Clear all five pairs to win.

Are the synonyms exact or close?

They are close-meaning pairs from the 7ESL lexicon. True 100% synonyms in English are rare — even "big" and "large" carry slightly different connotations. The post-round reveal explains the nuance between each pair in plain English so you learn not just that they are related, but exactly how they differ in tone or register.

What CEFR level is Synonym Match good for?

The default pool is B1 to C1 vocabulary, so it suits intermediate to advanced ESL learners. That is the sweet spot where students stop learning words one at a time and start building synonym networks. A2 beginners may find some pairs hard; C2 learners will find the puzzles fast but still useful for nuance review.

Is Synonym Match useful for IELTS or TOEFL writing?

Yes, extremely. High-band IELTS Writing and TOEFL essays both reward lexical range — the ability to swap repeated words for accurate near-synonyms. Synonym Match drills exactly that skill and surfaces the register difference (formal vs informal, neutral vs emotional) that strong essays need.

Can I play without signing up?

Yes. Synonym Match is fully playable as a guest with no sign-up. Your daily streak is saved on your device. Creating a free 7ESL account is only useful if you want to sync streaks between phone and laptop, save personal bests, or merge progress with the rest of your 7ESL learning.
