Vocabulary Flashcards
Study ten English words with definition, IPA, audio and example. Self-rate and track progress.
About Vocabulary Flashcards
Vocabulary Flashcards is a free ESL English word study tool — not a game but a focused 10-card session for serious learners. Each session shows ten English flashcards. The front of each card has a single word; the back reveals the full entry: definition, part of speech, IPA pronunciation, audio button, an example sentence and the CEFR level tag. After each card you self-rate "Knew it" or "Didn't know" — that rating is stored so you can see your progress across sessions.
The deck is drawn from the 7ESL lexicon, the same word source used by every other game on the site, so what you learn here directly reinforces vocabulary that turns up in Daily Word Quest, Connections, Spelling Bee and Definition Match. You can filter by CEFR level from A1 right up to C1, focus on a single part of speech (verbs, adjectives, nouns), or pick a themed pack like "academic vocabulary" or "business English". After every 10-card session you get a quick score and a one-tap link to study a new set.
The combination of self-rating, audio pronunciation and CEFR filtering makes this one of the most efficient single tools on 7ESL for steady vocabulary growth. Suits A1 to C1 learners, IELTS and TOEFL candidates building targeted lexical range, and teachers preparing a class word list. Free, no sign-up needed.

Frequently asked questions
How do I use Vocabulary Flashcards?
Each session shows ten cards. Read the word on the front and try to recall its meaning. Tap "Show Answer" to flip the card and reveal the definition, IPA pronunciation, an audio button, example sentence and CEFR level. Then tap "Knew it" or "Didn't know" to self-rate. After all ten cards you see your session score and can start a new set.
Does this use spaced repetition?
The current version is a self-rated 10-card study session, not a full spaced-repetition system (SRS). Your "Knew it" / "Didn't know" ratings are stored so you can track progress and re-study weak areas. A fuller SRS scheduler is on the roadmap. For now the tool sits between simple word lists and a full SRS like Anki — fast to use and free.
Can I filter the word list?
Yes. Filter the deck by CEFR level (A1 to C1), by part of speech (nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs), or by themed pack such as "academic vocabulary", "travel English" or "business English". That lets you target your weakest area directly — for example, picking only B2 verbs if your IELTS speaking range is lacking.
Are pronunciations included?
Yes. Every flashcard back includes IPA transcription and a native-speaker audio button. Tap the speaker icon to hear the word read aloud in clean native English. That audio layer is the most important difference between flashcards that build active spoken vocabulary and flashcards that only build silent reading vocabulary.
Is Vocabulary Flashcards free?
Yes, completely free with no sign-up required. You can run unlimited 10-card sessions as a guest. A free 7ESL account is only useful if you want your self-rated progress to sync between phone and laptop, or merge with the rest of your 7ESL vocabulary history across the games and lesson articles.
