About Boggle

Boggle is a free word grid game for ESL learners and word puzzle fans. You get a 4×4 grid of sixteen random letters and three minutes on the clock to find as many real English words as you can. To form a word, drag from one letter to the next through adjacent cells — left, right, up, down, or any of the four diagonals — and each letter can be used at most once in the same word.

Minimum word length is three letters, and points scale with length: 3 or 4 letters earn one point, 5 letters earn two, 6 letters earn three, and any word of 7 or more letters earns five points. Every guess is checked against the 7ESL lexicon — a dictionary of over 200,000 English words tagged by frequency and CEFR level — so common ESL vocabulary counts and obscure proper nouns do not. The grid is the same for every player worldwide, regenerated daily at 00:00 UTC, so you can compare scores fairly with friends.

Boggle is a brilliant ESL warm-up: it forces fast pattern recognition, drills spelling under pressure, and rewards both short common words (CAT, RING) and ambitious long finds (PLANTED, BAKING). Play as a guest with no sign-up; create a free 7ESL account if you want your daily score to sync across devices. Suits B1 to C1 learners, classroom warm-ups, and anyone who loves a fast word puzzle.

Frequently asked questions

How do I play Boggle on 7ESL?

A 4×4 grid of sixteen random letters appears when you load the page. To form a word, click or tap a letter and drag through ADJACENT letters — horizontal, vertical, or diagonal — to spell a word of three or more letters. Each cell can only be used once per word. Release your finger or mouse to submit the word automatically, or tap the Submit button if you prefer. You have three minutes on the clock to find as many real English words as you can. Common letters appear more often (E, T, A, R, S) so most days have plenty of findable words.

How is the score calculated?

Points scale with word length so longer finds are worth more. Three-letter and four-letter words are worth one point each. Five-letter words are worth two points. Six-letter words are worth three points. Any word of seven or more letters earns five points. Your total updates instantly after each correct guess. The maximum possible score depends on the grid — some grids hide enormous seven and eight letter words, others reward fast volume on three and four letter finds.

Is the grid the same for everyone?

Yes. The grid is deterministic per UTC day, so every player worldwide gets the exact same sixteen letters in the same positions on the same date. The grid resets at 00:00 UTC each day. That means your three-minute round is directly comparable to a friend's — share the date and the score, and you have an honest benchmark. The letter distribution is weighted toward common English letters, so vowels and frequent consonants (E, T, A, O, I, N, S, R) appear more often than rare letters like Q, X, or Z.

How does word validation work?

Every word you submit is checked server-side against the 7ESL lexicon — a dictionary of over 200,000 English words tagged by frequency and CEFR level. Real ESL vocabulary at A1 through C2 levels is accepted. Proper nouns, abbreviations, and rude or offensive entries are excluded. If the dictionary check fails, the game tells you "Not in dictionary" and you can keep tracing. The path itself is validated separately — letters must be adjacent and no cell can be reused — so accidental ghost paths are also caught and rejected with the message "Letters must be adjacent."

Can I play Boggle on mobile?

Yes. Boggle is mobile-first. Every grid cell is at least a 64-pixel touch target (well above the 44-pixel WCAG minimum), so drag selection is accurate even on small phones. Touch events use the same gesture as mouse drag — press, drag through adjacent letters, release. The current word reads out above the grid so you can confirm what you are spelling, and a Submit and Clear button pair sits below for tap-based play if dragging is awkward.
