Hangman
Guess the hidden English word letter by letter. Six wrong guesses and the rocket fizzles.
About Hangman
Hangman is the classic letter-guessing word game, rebuilt for English learners with a kid-friendly rocket theme. A hidden English word sits behind a row of blanks. Tap letters from the on-screen keyboard — right letters reveal in the word, wrong letters burn one of six fuel units from your rocket.
Run out of fuel and the rocket fizzles on the launchpad; solve the word before all six fuel units are gone and the rocket launches. The rocket replaces the traditional gallows imagery, which makes the game safe to use in classrooms and with younger learners while keeping the same mechanic adults remember. Words are drawn from the 7ESL lexicon and tagged from A1 to C1 by CEFR level, so you can pick a difficulty that matches your stage of English.
After every round the answer reveals with its definition, IPA pronunciation, part of speech, and an example sentence, so each game ends with a small vocabulary lesson. Hangman is great for absolute beginners building letter recognition, intermediate learners drilling spelling patterns, teachers running a quick five-minute classroom warm-up, and parents who want a screen activity their kids can also learn from. Free to play, no sign-up required; an account just saves your streak and best score.

Frequently asked questions
How do I play Hangman on 7ESL?
A hidden word appears as a row of blanks at the top of the screen. Tap letters from the on-screen keyboard one at a time. If the letter is in the word, it slots into every position where it belongs. If not, one unit of rocket fuel burns away. You have six wrong guesses before the rocket fails. Solve the whole word to launch.
Why a rocket instead of a stick figure?
The rocket theme keeps the same six-strikes mechanic of classic Hangman but replaces the traditional gallows imagery, which can be uncomfortable in classrooms and with younger learners. The rocket fuel countdown gives the same urgency and visual feedback without the dark theme, so teachers and parents can use the game with confidence.
What word lists does Hangman use?
Every hidden word is drawn from the 7ESL lexicon and tagged by CEFR level (A1 to C1) and frequency. You can choose your level to keep the difficulty honest — A1 picks short common words, C1 picks longer, less frequent ones. The reveal at the end of each round shows the CEFR tag and full word entry.
Is Hangman good for English learners?
Yes, especially for beginners and lower-intermediate students. The game forces you to think about letter frequency in English (vowels first, then common consonants like R, S, T, N), trains spelling patterns by elimination, and ends every round with a definition and example sentence. It is also one of the easiest games to play in short bursts.
Can I play without an account?
Yes. Hangman is fully playable as a guest with no sign-up at all. Your last few results are stored on your device. Creating a free 7ESL account is only useful if you want your streak, XP and personal best to sync between phone and laptop or merge with the rest of your 7ESL progress.
