About Rhyme Match
Rhyme Match is a free daily English phonics and rhyming game made for ESL learners who want to train their ear for sound, not just spelling. The board shows ten English words. Five pairs rhyme — they share the same ending sound — and your job is to find them by tapping any two words.
The trick that makes the game powerful for English learners is that rhyme in English is about sound, not letters. "Through" rhymes with "blue", "tough" rhymes with "stuff", and "eight" rhymes with "late": you cannot solve the board by looking at spelling alone, you have to hear the word in your head. That is exactly the skill English learners need most for confident pronunciation and listening, and exactly the skill that classroom spelling lessons usually miss.
Every word is drawn from the 7ESL pronunciation dictionary with full IPA transcription, and the post-round reveal shows the IPA for each pair so you can see (and hear) why they rhyme. Ten English words appear on the board. Tap any word to select it, then tap a second word to test whether they rhyme. Do the words have to look similar to rhyme?
No, and that is the whole point. English rhyme is about sound, not spelling. "Through" rhymes with "blue" even though the endings look completely different. "Eight" rhymes with "late". "Tough" rhymes with "stuff". The game forces you to hear the word in your head, which is exactly the pronunciation skill ESL learners most need to build.
