Word Chain
Build the longest chain — each new word starts with the last letter of the previous. 90-second clock.
About Word Chain
Word Chain is a free fast-paced English vocabulary recall game for ESL learners. You get one starting English word and a 90-second clock. Type a new word that begins with the last letter of the previous word — and then another, and another, building a chain as long as you can before time runs out. There are two rules: no repeats, and every word must be 3 to 10 letters long and a real English word in the 7ESL lexicon.
The game targets the chain length displayed at the top, and hitting that target before the timer expires unlocks a bonus. Word Chain trains the single hardest skill in second-language learning: fast active vocabulary recall under pressure. Multiple-choice quizzes test if you recognise a word; Word Chain tests if you can pull it out of your head in two seconds with a specific starting letter.
That cognitive load is exactly what real conversation needs, which is why this game is one of the most useful for IELTS and TOEFL speaking prep on the entire 7ESL games platform. Words are CEFR-tagged and the post-round reveal shows definitions for every word you played, plus a list of valid words you could have used at each step. Suits B1 to C1 learners who want to feel real fluency stress, anyone preparing for spoken English exams, and teachers running a high-energy classroom warm-up.

Frequently asked questions
How do I play Word Chain?
A start word appears at the top of the screen. Note its last letter. In the input box below, type any English word that begins with that letter, between 3 and 10 letters long, and press Enter. Then repeat — every new word must start with the last letter of the previous word — until you hit the target chain length or the 90-second timer runs out.
Can I repeat words?
No. Every word in your chain must be unique. The game tracks every word you have already played in the current round and rejects repeats with a short shake. That rule is what forces you to dig deeper into your vocabulary — easy words run out fast, and the second half of every chain is genuinely challenging.
What word list is used?
The 7ESL lexicon, filtered to 3 to 10 letters and tagged A2 to C1 by CEFR level. Proper nouns and obscure terms are excluded. If you type a word the game does not recognise it will shake red briefly with no time penalty so you can try another. The post-round reveal shows definitions for every word you played.
Why is Word Chain good for fluency?
Multiple-choice quizzes only test recognition. Word Chain tests retrieval — pulling a word out of memory with a specific starting letter under time pressure. That is the same cognitive load as real conversation. Daily play visibly speeds up active recall, which is why it is one of the strongest games here for IELTS and TOEFL speaking prep.
Is there a chain length target?
Yes. Every round shows a target chain length at the top — typically eight to twelve words depending on level. Hit the target before the 90-second timer expires for a completion bonus. You can keep chaining past the target for extra points until time runs out, which makes the game a personal-best chase as well as a target.
