About Word Ladder
Word Ladder is a free daily English word chain puzzle built for ESL learners, inspired by the classic invented by Lewis Carroll. You start with one English word at the top of the ladder and must reach a target word at the bottom by changing exactly one letter per rung. Every rung must be a real English word — no nonsense letter strings allowed. The challenge is finding a valid path, and the bonus challenge is finding the shortest possible path in as few steps as possible.
The puzzle is generated daily using BFS over the 7ESL lexicon, so every start–end pair has at least one solvable chain, and the optimal step count is calculated up front. Words are filtered to four to six letters and tagged from A2 to B2 CEFR levels, which keeps the puzzle solvable for intermediate learners without becoming trivial. After you finish, the reveal shows the shortest possible path next to your path so you can compare strategy.

How do I play Word Ladder?
You see a start word at the top of the ladder and a goal word at the bottom. Type a new word into the next rung that changes exactly one letter from the word above. The new word must be a valid English word. Repeat — one letter changed per rung — until you reach the goal word. Try to do it in the fewest steps possible.
What counts as a valid word?
Any word in the 7ESL lexicon at A2 to B2 CEFR level, four to six letters long. Proper nouns and archaic English are excluded. If you type a word the game does not recognise, the rung shakes red with a short message. The end-of-round reveal lists every valid neighbour of each word so you can see what you missed.
Is there always a valid solution?
Yes. Every daily puzzle is generated with a breadth-first search on the lexicon graph, which guarantees at least one valid chain from start to goal exists. The system also calculates the optimal step count up front, so when you finish you can see how close to the shortest possible path you got.
Why is Word Ladder good for English learners?
It trains "spelling neighbourhood" thinking — knowing which letters can swap while leaving a real word. That intuition is the same pattern that makes native English readers fast and accurate. For ESL learners at B1 to C1 it visibly improves reading speed and spelling accuracy over a few weeks of daily play.
How long does one puzzle take?
