Wordle Solver

The 7ESL Wordle Solver takes the colour clues from your guesses and narrows five-letter words down to the handful that still fit. Feed in the letters Wordle has marked green, yellow and grey, and the solver filters the dictionary to show only the words that match every clue. It is built to help when you are a guess or two in and want to see which answers remain possible, without giving the game away in a single click.

How to enter your clues

The solver gives you a box for each kind of clue. Use Starts with and Ends with for green letters at the first and last positions, and the Position 2, Position 3 and Position 4 boxes for green letters fixed in the middle. Put any letters Wordle turned green or yellow -- the letters you know are in the word -- into the Contains box. Finally, type the grey letters that are not in the word into the Excludes box. Fill in as many or as few clues as you have; the more you add, the shorter the list.

Understanding green, yellow and grey

Wordle uses three colours, and each one means something different. A green letter is correct and in the right spot, which is why it goes into a specific position box. A yellow letter is in the word but in the wrong spot, so it belongs in Contains but not in any position box. A grey letter is not in the word at all and goes into Excludes. Keeping these straight is the key to a clean solve: a letter should never sit in both Contains and Excludes.

Reading the results and guessing well

The solver returns the words that satisfy all your clues, each shown with badges such as its CEFR level and frequency, which is handy because Wordle answers tend to be common words. When several candidates remain, the smart next guess is often a word that tests new letters rather than one from the list, so you eliminate as many possibilities as you can in one turn.
