More about the Letter “X”

The XXX symbol is sometimes used to identify (and censor) pornographic material. It has also been used to identify bottles of moonshine (indicating that the alcohol went through a three-step process during its distillation).

In mathematics, X is used to indicate an unknown variable or value. When Wilhelm Roentgen discovered X-rays, he chose the letter X because it represented something unknown.

X is also sometimes used to represent Christ. The use of “X-mas” can be traced back to the fourth century when the Roman Emperor Constantine the Great began using the “chi” symbol (similar to X). Anglo-Saxon scribes began using it to abbreviate Christmas in the ninth century (possibly to save space on rare parchment paper).

You also see the prefix used with a hyphen where the meaning becomes “former.” Examples of this include: ex-wife, ex-mayor, ex-con, etc..
