Free Online Writing Tools

All the free writing tools in one place: word and sentence counters, case converters, reading time, readability and grammar checkers, paraphrasing and summarizing.

This page is the home of the 7ESL writing tools: free tools that measure, clean, format and check your writing, all running instantly in your browser. Pick a card above to jump into a tool, or read on to see what each group does. None of them needs an account, none of them stores your text, and all of them work on desktop, tablet and phone.

Measure your text

The Word Counter gives you words, characters and sentences at a glance and is the tool to keep open while writing to a limit. The Sentence Counter adds paragraph counts and average sentence length, the quickest style health-check there is. The Reading Time Calculator converts your word count into minutes, both silent reading time and speaking time, so you know what you are asking of a reader or an audience before you publish or present.

Clean and format

The Case Converter switches text between sentence case, lower case, upper case, capitalized, title, alternating and inverse case in one click, and the Title Case Converter goes further for headlines, applying real AP, APA, Chicago or MLA capitalization rules. Remove Extra Spaces strips the whitespace junk that rides along with text copied from PDFs, emails and spreadsheets: double spaces, trailing spaces, blank lines and unwanted line breaks.

Check and improve

The Readability Checker scores your text with the Flesch reading-ease and grade-level formulas and tells you whether your audience will find it easy going. The Grammar Checker and Sentence Checker review your writing for grammar, spelling and punctuation problems and suggest corrections. The Paraphrasing Tool rewrites a sentence in a different register, from formal to simple, while keeping the meaning, and the Summarizer condenses long text into its key points.

The tools share one design: paste, click, copy. Used together they cover the whole final pass of a piece of writing, from cleaning up the raw text to checking its grammar to knowing exactly how long it will hold a reader.
